Benjamin Scheuer is the center of attention. After a performance of “The Lion,” his coming-of-age solo musical, audience members mill about Manhattan Theater Club’s studio space, where the show is playing. The ladies flock to him first, perhaps attracted by his linen suit, mop of sandy hair and slight British lilt, a product of his bicontinental heritage. He swiftly diverts the focus to his admirers, chatting with anyone who stops to flirt or offer congratulations.

Benjamin Scheuer is a New York City singer-songwriter and the star — in fact, the only performer — in a new Manhattan Theater Company production called The Lion directed by Sean Daniels. In this autobiographical show, Scheuer, who’s just 32, reflects on the ups and downs of a fairly turbulent life as told through story and song.

This week’s video features the composer and musician Benjamin Scheuer singing the number “Cookie-tin Banjo” from “The Lion,”his coming-of-age solo show about his relationship with his father, who died when Benjamin was 13. In the song Mr. Scheuer remembers how his love of music was inspired by a “simple homemade toy” crafted for him by his father.
